HANSEL & GRETEL

New World School of the Arts

Concept & Direction: Jeffrey Marc Buchman

Choreographer: Rosa Mercedes

Set Design: Scene Stealer Designs

"Director Jeffrey Buchman's concept accentuated the darkness of the story, setting it in the U.S. during the Great Depression where extreme poverty very well could have inspired a horrific act such as the one that plays out during the overture: a mother abandoning her child in the forest because she can no longer care for her. High praise to Buchman for bringing a new twist to a well-known work from the repertoire. All indications are that this 19th century opera has found its allure with a 21st century audience."
